Try Someting New

by eatingbirdfood on September 13, 2008

There are lots of things I enjoy about being a part of the food blogging world, but one of my favorite things is seeing new products and new food ideas, and trying them out myself. With that said, here’s an example.

Not until I started reading food blogs, did I realize the endless possibilities of oatmeal. I had always liked it, but basically switched between having different flavors of pre-sweetened microwavable packets of instant, maple brown sugar was my flavor of choice, or the heart healthy blueberry- which I think has since been discontinued. But when breakfast came around, as it continually did, day after day, cereal was usually my first choice.

After viewing food blogs and seeing all the oat creations, which I have to give most of the credit to Kath. Rolled oats combined with the stove top made it’s debut in my kitchen. Oatmeal is now the breakfast of choice – even during the summer. Needless to say, things have changed! The stove top oats don’t take that much longer, taste way better, keep me full longer, and lend themselves to a ton of different combinations. I realize that you can add stuff to instant oatmeal. And when you are on the go- it’s awesome to just grab a packet and bring it with, but I do love me some stove top oats. Even if I have to wash a pot.

So with that lengthy story over, here are some oats from yesterday. Oatmeal with 1/2 a banana cooked in – wheatberries (another food item I never tried until food blogging) and raisins on top along with a spoonful of PB. Delicious!

Last but not least, another oatmeal method I had never tried was again inspired by blog world and that is cottage cheese oats. I think Erin over at Care to Eat had been perfecting the exact time to add the cottage cheese in. I took her advice and added it after I turned off the stove heat. I loved the creaminess of oats after adding just a spoonful of cottage cheese – I used the Friendship whipped cottage cheese. I had also never tried that before either. I bought some yesterday at Whole Foods and love it, plain and in oats!

So these were my cottage cheese, banana, granola, ground flax (yet another item found through food blogs), and PB oats, which I ate this morning.100_1730.JPG

Then of course there are other reasons oatmeal is awesome, which includes oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, which I made for Isaac last night. 100_1727.JPG

Your cookies look amazing. I am glad you enjoyed all your oatmeal mixtures. I am always trying to come up with new ways to flavor my oatmeal. Oatmeal is definitely my favorite food.

I love how many great foods and food ideas food blogging has introduced me to. It’s quite amazing.

As is oatmeal. I STILL haven’t tried the cottage cheese oats. Which is ridiculous since I love cottage cheese so much. I need to make it a high priority breakfast.

And those cookies look sooo good.

I definitely agree that one of the best parts of food blogging is becoming inspired to try something new. I never made stove top oats until I read Kath’s blog and now I know I’ve been missing out my whole life!

I LOVE Friendship whipped cottage cheese. I’ve only been able to find it at the Whole Foods close to my campus, so I feel very lucky.

Those oatmeal chocolate chip cookies look INCREDIBLE! Do you have a recipe?

I, too, never realized just how many oatmeal combinations and creations there are! I thought the only variation were the ones that come in the instant packets, like apple cinnamon or maple sugar.

Then I started reading Kath’s blog, and it’s like she comes up with a new oatmeal creation every day. It’s amazing – she never runs out of ideas! Then I started seeing that other bloggers have fun oatmeal creations as well.

And before reading food blogs, I had never heard of savory oats or adding cottage cheese to oatmeal.

I still just stick to oatmeal with banana slices, since it just never disappoints! But, I love reading about everybody’s oatmeal combos because they look and sound fantastic!

By the way, I second Jenn’s request for the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies recipe. They look amazing!

I agree about food blogs introducing me to new foods. I haven’t had the cottage cheese oats yet, but it’s on my to do list.
