The Sexual Root

by eatingbirdfood on September 3, 2008

For breakfast this morning I had a smoothie that consisted of almond milk, frozen banana, raw cocoa powder, and maca, Peru’s Natural Viagra. It’s okay if it makes you laugh that I am talking about natural viagra on my blog, because it’s making me laugh as I type. The article from Discovery Health that I linked to explains the maca root in detail, but I got info from Isaac’s mom, which by the way, is also funny because this is my boyfriend’s mom we are speaking about. Anyway, she has been ordering super foods from the raw foods guru- David Wolfe. These super foods include inca berries, gogi berries, cacoa powder and cacoa nibs (has anyone anyone ever had chocolate covered cacao nibs… so good!), and lastly maca . I went to her house this morning before going to Whole Foods and she made me the smoothie. One source I had read, aka, wikipedia said that the sexual benefits haven’t been proven, but everything else I have read claim that maca does produce sexual benefits. And everyone can use a little sexual healing… right? I had to post about this stuff- I knew you guys would want to know about it. And, I’ll let you know the results after tonight… JUST KIDDING!

Alright so now that we’ve had the sex talk, pardon the picture of my smoothie I was busy guzzling it down before I realized I should take a photo… it was frothy.

At Whole Foods I had a ton of samples, which basically made up the rest of my breakfast. There is no way I could get pictures of everything.. here are the items I remember eating: pineapple, grapes, hummus, salsa with 2 tortilla chips, a oatmeal gluten free cookie, a 1/2 of a piece of cranberry pecan bread, one bite of cinnamon raisin bread, general tso’s vegan “chicken”, and a cucumber avocado sushi roll… Thats all I can remember.

When I returned home I had some lunch – 2 pieces of leftover tofu and salad with a few baked tortilla chips and salsa.

I was still hungry and I wanted to try the puffed wheat cereal I bought so I made a small bowl. It’s nice for a snack because with milk included it only has 100 calories for 1 cup of cereal and no sugar. For some reason it does taste a bit sweet to me though.

I was feeling quite snacky today, probably because I had some new snacks in the house that I wanted to try. Which lead me to eat one of the new z-bars. I was pretty excited to finally try the Blueberry Z-bar. I liked it a lot – tasted like a very sweet blueberry muffin and was quite delicious. I’ll be buying this flavor again for sure.

I met up with my Wednesday night running group and did my furthest distance ever – 8 miles! It went well – the last mile was completely uphill so that was a bit tiring but other than that it felt awesome! I came home and soaked in the bathtub for a while, then decided I should shower because I didn’t feel clean after being in the tub. For dinner I heated up a slice of tofu, made broccolini, and a first for me- Quinoa, which by the way I love – it’s chewy and very grain like, only it’s a seed – and it’s high in protein (it’s a complete protein) and fiber. I think I might be adding it in with my oats in the AM.

After dinner I had a sugar free snack pack with some flax sprinkled on.100_1604.JPG

Haha, you are hilarious. “I’ll let you know the results after tonight…” :)

So glad you liked the blueberry ZBaR!!

I love that dinner pick – the quinoa looks so cool in it’s little flan-shaped mound! Not that it reminds me of flan…but, cool shape! And that pudding dessert looks yum.

Ha, wow I love that your BF’s mom let you in on this, haha. I feel like the awkward factor would be pretty high, but I love awkwardness, so this cracks me up!

Your tofu looks so good. How do you prepare it? That may be in the archives, so I apologize if there’s a recipe somewhere and I’m just not seeing it…

Megan- Thanks, I have started to love broccolini as well.

Eatingbender – It does kind of look flan shaped – I felt like I was building a sand castle.

Heather- I agree, it’s pretty comical.

Rose- When making into slices to save for use throughout the week I take one block of firm tofu and wrap it with paper towels and a hand towel and sit a book on it to get the moisture out. I cut it into 6-8 slices, marinate those in soy sauce for 15 minutes- couple hours, depending on how much time I have. I mix up some other seasonings.. whatever I have around – sesame oil, garlic powder, onion powder, 5 spice seasoning… and rub that on the tofu. Lastly I bake it on 375 for 20-30 minutes. I usually flip it once through the process and just keep an eye on it, to make sure it doesn’t burn.
The reason the tofu in this photo is speckled is because I bought herbed tofu this time.

My ma makes a fantastic smoothie that for a while I was having as breakfast as it kept me energised until late lunchtime. Want to know what it is? Ok, here goes:

frozen banana slices (frozen bananas, as you know, make your smoothie thicker!)
soy milk
chunky peanut butter

that’s it! gorgeous.
