Tempeh Strikes Back

In a good way! I have previously mentioned that I don’t love tempeh. The one time I’ve tried it, I made it at home, and it was not pretty – basically I hated it and thought I would never eat it again. It had such a strong after taste that was almost musty flavored – just plain gross to me. But today a comfy little eatery – Harrison Street Cafe – a vegetarian and vegan coffee shop that serves both breakfast and lunch made me have a change of heart. My friend and I went for lunch and she insisted that their tempeh wasn’t gross but was mouth watering and quite delicious so I decided to have the Tempeh-Artichoke-Mozzarella sandwich with a side of red lentil soup. Maybe it’s the way they cook it, maybe my tempeh was bad, but it was sooo good! I want to go back to this shop everyday, but that might be costly so maybe I should get a job there, or maybe I will just dumpster dive outside of the restaurant to both reduce waste and eat there everyday like these folks. Okay, I’m kidding about that part, however I I don’t know exactly how I feel about the Freegans. I think that could be a post in it’s self.

Here is my plate:

And here is my friends plate with the same sandwich, but her plate is prettier for some reason…

And of course there were other mundane things I ate today that can’t possibly live up to the tempeh sandwich… so they get left out…

I’m glad tempeh was tasty the second time around. I actually have never had it before – and I think if I did it would have to be in a restaurant that knew what they were doing. Otherwise, I’m sure I would ruin it.

Freeganism, eh? I had never heard of that one before!

When you cooked the tempeh, did you blanche it first? You have to blanche it in order to get the bitterness out. I learned that the hard way.

That sandwich looks great… I love finding places like that to eat at and treat myself.. I say you give making tempeh another try and blog about how you made it and maybe some bloggers can give you some help!
