Size Does Matter

by eatingbirdfood on August 29, 2008

I like to use small utensils because I feel the big spoons and forks are too large for my mouth. Same goes for dishes – normally I don’t use our large plates and bowls when I make myself a meal, that way I keep my portions in control and feel as though there isn’t empty space on the plate that needs to be filled. This doesn’t mean that I don’t occasionally go back for seconds – it happens.

But today for lunch I used a large plate and pretty much filled it to the brim with delicious things: half of a whole wheat pita and carrots to dip in hummus, sauteed squash and onions, baby spinach, chick-peas, avocado, cherry tomatoes, and half of a mozzarella cheese stick. On the side I had half of a container of yogurt with granola.

Stonyfield lowfat Vanilla yogurt with Udi’s Granola.

I used the Udi’s Kids granola with my yogurt, I like it because it has freeze dried bananas and strawberries that kind of remind me of the marshmallows in Lucky Charms <– did anyone else always save the mallows for last when eating Lucky Charms?

There will be a full review posted soon under the product review section.

Mint is Cool

by eatingbirdfood on August 28, 2008

I finally got around to trying the Cool Mint Chocolate mini Clif Bar that I got at the half marathon race.

I won’t lie, at the race they had a whole basket of this flavor out to give away and then there was a huge box of the peanut butter flavor hidden under the table. I thought they were just trying to get rid of the cool mint ones because they weren’t all that good and saving the PB because they were easier to get rid of. I don’t know why I thought this… but it probably has something to do with the fact that Peanut Butter flavored bars are usually the best… does Peanut Butter Cookie LARA BAR ring a bell?

Surprisingly I really liked the cool mint flavor, it was kind of like eating a crunchy Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookie - actually it tasted a lot like a thin mint and thin mints are my favorite, those and samosas. The bar touts that it Contains Green Tea – A Natural Source of Caffeine. I can’t say that I felt any effect from the green tea, but that seems like a good addition to an energy bar. Overall, I liked this flavor, but Clif bars aren’t something I snack on often because they have more calories than your average bar. I perfer the z-bars over the large ones, but the mini clifs are a good size for snacking, and only 100 calories. And in case you were wondering, here are the nutritional for a regular sized Cool Mint Chocolate bar.

Tempeh Strikes Back

August 27, 2008

In a good way! I have previously mentioned that I don’t love tempeh. The one time I’ve tried it, I made it at home, and it was not pretty – basically I hated it and thought I would never eat it again. It had such a strong after taste that was almost musty flavored – [...]

Mid Night Snack with the Fly Trap

August 27, 2008

For lunch I decided to have carrots and peanut butter inspired by Em from Gliding Calm who has this combo often. I have to admit, it’s a great idea to combine the two and something I will probably add to my lunches. I also had a salad with left over salmon and more tomato, because [...]

Gotta Love Cinnamon Raisin Bread

August 26, 2008

Yesterday for breakfast I ended up having the same combonation as the day before yesterday.. the oats with PB. I felt just as full when I finished eating it, but I was home the majority of the morning and of course, as speculated, I couldn’t hold out and had a snack of dried fruit and granola [...]

Perks of Being a Race Volunteer

August 24, 2008

Out of all the volunteer options during a half-marathon I picked the food tent because I wouldn’t need to get there before the race and I wouldn’t have to stay long after the race. It was a good pick for several reasons, but being paid in food was one of the biggest perks. Of course I [...]
